Paint a Watercolor Postcard Set

Introduction

Step-by-step

1. Pick six recipients before you start painting

   Decide who's getting a postcard before you begin — this gives each piece a specific person in mind, which tends to produce more intentional, varied work than painting six of the same generic scene.

2. Sketch lightly in pencil first

   A light pencil sketch on each postcard gives you a composition guide without committing to paint immediately. Keep the sketch loose — you'll paint over most of the lines.

3. Work light to dark, largest areas first

   Lay down the lightest washes and largest areas of color first (sky, background), then add midtones, then the darkest, smallest details last. Painting in this order avoids muddying lighter areas with darker paint.

4. Let each layer dry before adding the next

   Watercolor blooms unpredictably if you paint wet-on-wet when you meant to layer cleanly. A hairdryer on low speeds up drying between layers if you're impatient.

5. Add just one detailed focal point per card

   Resist detailing the whole postcard evenly — pick one small area (a window, a flower, a face) to render with more detail, and let the rest stay loose. This creates visual interest without requiring six fully detailed paintings.

6. Let all six dry completely before writing on the back

   Watercolor paper can take longer to fully dry than it looks — writing on a not-quite-dry card can smear ink or warp the paper. Give it at least an hour, longer in humid conditions.

7. Address, stamp, and mail within the week

   The project isn't complete until the postcards are actually in the mail — set a specific day to address and send all six rather than letting them sit finished on a shelf.

The one material upgrade worth making

If you only upgrade one thing before starting, make it the paper. Genuine watercolor postcard stock (cold-press, at least 140lb/300gsm) handles multiple wet layers without buckling the way regular cardstock does — cheap paper is a common reason a technique that should work doesn't.

Student-grade paints and a basic round brush in two sizes are genuinely fine for six postcards; the paper is where quality differences show up fastest.
